Academy Award Nominee of NZ box office Smash “BOY” visits Brisbane for intimate Q & A

Academy Award Nominated director Taika Waititi has written and directed this year’s box office surprise BOY, and Palace Centro is pleased to welcome him to Brisbane.

On Thursday August 12, 2010, Palace Cinemas will present a preview screening of BOY, followed by a question and answer session with Taika Waititi.  Taika wrote, directed and also stars in BOY.

The film has smashed all box office records in its native NZ, where the film is now in the top ten grossing films of all time in that country (even bigger than films such as King Kong; Transformers; andThe Chronicles of Narnia). It was also the winner of the Audience Award (most popular film) at the Sydney Film Festival.

The year is 1984, and on the rural East Coast of New Zealand “Thriller” is changing kids’ lives. Inspired by the Oscar nominated Two Cars, One Night, BOYis the hilarious and heartfelt coming-of-age tale about heroes, magic and Michael Jackson. BOY is a dreamer who loves Michael Jackson. He lives with his brother ROCKY, a tribe of deserted cousins and his Nan. Boy’s other hero, his father, ALAMEIN, is the subject of Boy’s fantasies, and he imagines him as a deep-sea diver, war hero and a close relation of Michael Jackson (he can even dance like him). In reality he’s “in the can for robbery”. When Alamein returns home after 7 years away, Boy is forced to confront the man he thought he remembered, find his own potential and learn to get along without the hero he had been hoping for.

Palace Centro Cinemas Manager, Melissa Woite says “Palace Cinemas is passionate about providing patrons with unique experiences such as these “Meet the director question and answer sessions.  We are honoured to have Taika Waititi come to Brisbane and pleased we are able to offer our patrons something more.”
