From its premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival through to standing ovations at the Sydney and Melbourne Film festivals, critics and audiences are definitely on the same page about LIBERAL ARTS, calling it “a perfect, crowd pleasing film*.”
Josh Radnor (best known as Ted from TV’s smash-hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother), not only stars in but writes and directs this story of Jesse; a jaded, thirtysomething whose life hasn’t worked out quite the way he’d planned. But when he returns to his old university to give a speech at his beloved former professor’s retirement dinner, Jesse meets Zibby (Martha Marcy May Marlene sensation Elizabeth Olsen) and sparks fly for the first time in a long time. Zibby is intelligent, beautiful and sassy – she’s also nineteen and Jesse is confronted by his attraction to her…and the dilemma of whether their age difference is greater than all that they have in common.
With loveable leads and a great supporting cast that includes Allison Janney (seen recently in The Help and loved for her work on The West Wing), as a cynical professor with a few more tough lessons to teach Jesse, Richard Jenkins (from Killing Them Softly and Eat Pray Love) as the reluctant retiree, and even spiritually levelling Zac Efron (The Lucky One and The Paperboy) LIBERAL ARTS is a touching, upbeat tale and a comedy that you’ll simply fall in love with.
Now Showing atLiberal Arts is a decent, heart-on-the-sleeve movie; it pays its audience the compliment of treating us like intelligent people.
