SPA17 The Tip of the Iceberg18th April, 2017
True-life events, when 20 employees tragically committed suicide at France Telecom in 2009, act as sobering inspiration for writer-director David Cánovas’ debut feature.
Set in a not-so mythical world of profit at any cost, a multinational company is shaken when three of its employees commit suicide. One of the company’s executives, Sofía Cuevas (Maribel Verdú from Y Tu Mamá También and Pan’s Labyrinth), is chosen to prepare a report on the suicides; but not so much for workplace safety but to assist those at the upper echelons of the company to deal with the negative publicity.
The further she delves into the lives of the dead employees, and experiences firsthand the almost totalitarian conditions in which the rank-and-file perform, Sofia – once a strident supporter of the company – finds herself identifying more with the human toll. It becomes apparent, while the dead had other fears and anxieties plaguing them, the workplace culture and a mysterious Iceberg Project have a lot to answer for.
A sinister and testosterone-riddled thriller, The Tip of the Iceberg holds its cards close to its chest, incrementally playing its hand with every clue Sofía uncovers. Playing in the Spanish Film Festival in Australia, 2017.
