Winner of the Palme d’Or (top prize) at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, THE WHITE RIBBON confirms Michael Haneke (Hidden, The Piano Teacher) as one of the most important and consistent filmmakers of his time.

His latest masterpiece is an analysis of a small Protestant village in northern Germany on the eve of World War I. It's the story of the children and teenagers of a choir run by the village schoolteacher, and their families: the baron, the steward, the pastor, the doctor, the midwife, the tenant farmers.

Within this microcosm a series of disturbing incidents take place, which gradually assume the character of a ritual of punishment – yet the identity of the perpetrators becomes a source of mystery. Who is behind it all?

"5 stars. THE WHITE RIBBON has chilling brilliance and icy exactitude, filmed in black and white with the lustre of liquid nitrogen, and its director, Michael Haneke, achieves a new refinement of mastery and audacity... Scenes and sequences that are instant classics... A profoundly disquieting movie, superbly acted and directed. Its sinister riddle glitters more fiercely each time I watch it."

Peter Bradshaw, THE GUARDIAN

"This haunting film never pushes itself on you. It trusts you to suss out the horror that lies beneath the veneer of innocence. You'll be knocked for a loop."
Peter Travers, ROLLING STONE
