Even in a pandemic, the Oscar season is smashing records against several categories, and we’ve been so proud to be involved with so many of the nominees at Palace Cinemas!
For the first time ever, two female filmmakers have landed nominations for Best Director, with both Chloé Zhao and Emerald Fennell earning nominations for their incredible films Nomadland and Promising Young Woman, respectively. More records were broken with the first Asian American and Muslim performers garnering nominations for Best Actor, Steven Yuen for his beautiful work in Minari, and Riz Ahmed’s The Sound of Metal. The Father performer Anthony Hopkins, who at 83 years old, is now the oldest Best Actor nominee ever. With six Oscar nominations, Judas and the Black Messiah is the first all-Black produced film to be nominated for Best Picture with stars Daniel Kaluuya and LaKeith Stanfield also landing nominations. Finally, in total, the nominations for the 93rd annual Academy Awards saw 70 women receive 76 nominations, a record for any given year.
