‘Invisible Man’ Director Leigh Whannell in Talks for Ryan Gosling’s ‘Wolfman’

14 July

The Invisible Man director (and Australia’s own) Leigh Whannell is currently in talks to helm Ryan Gosling’s ‘Wolfman’ for Universal Pictures. Whannell will also be penning a treatment for the film, based on his own original idea, and Blumhouse, which teamed with Whannell on The Invisible Man has been attached to produce ‘The Wolfman’.

We previously covered a story in late May which discussed Universal looking to find a director for the star-vehicle, with writers Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo writing the script based of Gosling’s original pitch. It looks like the success of The Invisible Man has not only given the studio enough confidence to back the production but also enough confidence to reinstate Whannell in the creative control seat.

Originally, Universal planned on creating an interconnected universe with its vast catalogue of monster movies but hesitated with the underwhelming performance of Tom Cruise’s The Mummy. The Invisible Man has made that idea a reality, with the film grossing more than $125 million at the worldwide box office despite cinema closures during the height of the COVID pandemic.

Whannell has a first-look deal across film and television with Blumhouse for projects he writes, directs or produces and this collaboration has led to the creation of seven projects, including the ‘Insidious’ franchise. It would appear that the project is in safe and very capable hands.

This is shaping up to be a film to look forward to!
