Unfortunately, we won’t be able to celebrate Mother’s Day this year with you, but to make sure we don’t miss out on the joy of cinema, we have chosen four films we believe that every Mother will love on their special day.
MIA MADRE (2016) | Nanni Moretti
Margherita, a director in the middle of her latest project, has to deal with the deterioration of her mother from her illness and estrangement of her daughter whilst combating with a hammy American actor and her mutinous crew. This dramedy is witty, whimsical and explores the complex relationship between mother and daughter across generations, whilst it grapples with dramatic elements, John Turturro provides a comedic undertone that carries joyfully throughout the film.
“Love, death, cinema – they’re all there in “Mia Madre,” bumping up against one another beautifully” Manohla Dargls, New York Times.
MAMMA MIA (2008) | Phyllida Lloyd
Featuring the incredible cast of Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard and Julie Waters MAMMA MIA follows the story of a bride-to-be trying to find her real father before exchanging her wedding vows, set to the fun and exuberant music of ABBA this classic is heart-warming, hilarious and all-round fun.
“Mamma Mia has been made with the most delicious, joyful abandon and all it asks is that you joyfully and deliciously abandon yourself.” Deborah Ross, The Spectator.
LADY BIRD (2017) | Greta Gerwig
A coming of age story following a seventeen-year-old girl in Sacramento California in 2002, Greta Gerwig delivers fresh insight into the turmoil in female adolescence and builds an incredible mother-daughter relationship between Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf full of laughter, heartache and understanding only a child-parent relationship can provide.
“What separates Lady Bird from the pack is the funny, heartfelt way in delves into the relationship between mother and daughter.” Mathew Toomey, ABC.
THELMA AND LOUISE (1991) | Ridley Scott
Two best friends embark on a road-trip adventure, but it soon turns into a terrifying escape from the police as the women flee from the crimes they have committed. Starring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis, THELMA AND LOUISE is funny, heartbreaking and a potent fable that transcends the feminist theme and delivers a story of freedom and friendship… and features a hunky young Brad Pitt.
“This wincingly funny, pertinent and heartbreaking road movie means to get under your skin, and it does.” Peter Travers, Rolling Stone.
