WEEKLY WATCH LIST

Sharing Is Caring

6 May

We’ll be sharing cinema together again soon, but until then, Palace Cinemas wants to share some of our film favourites with our Weekly Watch List.  Here’s to sharing and staying safe.

ANIMAL KINGDOM (2010) | David Michôd

A seventeen-year-old navigates his survival amongst a criminal family and a detective who thinks he can save him. With confident pacing and fearless performances, ANIMAL KINGDOM is one of the best films to emerge from the Australian film industry and boasts the incredible cast of Joel Edgerton, Ben Mendelsohn, Guy Pearce, Jacki Weaver and was the breakout film by Australian writer/director David Michôd.

“Step up for a pulverizing Aussie crime drama that cuts to the dark heart of the killing machine known as family.” Peter Travers, Rolling Stone.

Rent it on iTunes, Google Play or Youtube or stream on Stan.

BURNING (2018) | Chang-dong Lee

Jong-su bumps into a girl who used to live in his neighbourhood, she asks him to take care of her cat whilst on a trip to Africa. She then returns in tow with a mysterious young man she met, suddenly she disappears. Patient and quietly gripping BURNING is a masterpiece of character study with a thriller plot that lures the audience in and subverts every expectation.

‘Burning…refers to the resentment and the anger felt by the young and struggling towards the rich and overbearing. Revelations like these hover just beneath the surface of this beautifully directed mystery.” David Stratton, The Australian.

Rent it on iTunes, Google Play or Youtube or stream on Kanopy.

MOULIN ROUGE! (2001) | Baz Luhrmann

A young poet falls for a beautiful courtesan who is already coveted by another man. Baz Lurhman’s MOULIN ROUGE! delivers an over-the-top (in the best way possible) spectacle that is wholly unique and wildly original. Featuring immortalizing performances from Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor (and of course, Kylie Minogue) there is no limit to the enjoyment of this classic.

“A breathtaking baroque film that marries the best of theatre, opera and cinematic technique.” Liz Beardsworth, Empire Magazine.

Rent it on iTunes, Google Play or Youtube.

THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939) | Victor Fleming & King Vidor

Dorothy, an innocent farm girl is whisked out her mundane existence into a land of pure imagination, full of emerald forests, yellow brick roads and scary castles. An undeniable masterpiece, THE WIZRD OF OZ’s groundbreaking visuals and irresistible storytelling is every bit as resonate decades on and is a must-see for young and old.
“It’s a movie that speaks of Hollywood’s unacknowledged fascination with the exotic, the mad, the unreal.” Peter Bradshaw, Guardian.

Rent it on iTunes, Google Play or Youtube.

THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT (1994) | Stephan Elliott

A transgender woman and two drag performers travel across the Australian desert to perform their unique cabaret show… Tender, thoughtful and exuberant, THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT is a classic Australian feel-good film that bursts with charisma and showcases incredible performances from Terrance Stamp, Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce.

“The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert presents a defiant culture clash in generous, warmly entertaining ways. For all its glitter, this is the sort of film in which everyone becomes happier and nicer by the final reel.” Janet Maslin, New York Times.
