Based on the 1957 Broadway musical and global sensation, West Side Story is a modern-day Romeo and Juliet, starring Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler as Tony and Maria – star-crossed lovers from rival New York gangs The Jets and The Sharks. Directed by academy-award winning director Steven Spielberg, with a screenplay by Pulitzer and Tony winner Tony Kushner, West Side Story tells the classic tale of fierce rivalries and forbidden love in 1957 New York City. The love story of Tony and Maria is set against a background of racial tension and violence – showing the struggles of Puerto Rican immigrants in a hostile American community.
Spielberg’s West Side Story is vibrant and bursting with life, boasting impressive dance sequences choreographed by New York City Ballet’s Justin Peck and a screenplay that delights us with familiar songs amongst an updated, more realistic cityscape. West Side Story is a classic tale of its time, asking the enduring social question of who has the right to call a place home
