THE BYRON BAY INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2023

The Byron Bay International Film Festival (BBFF) is set to dazzle audiences at Palace Cinemas this October, showcasing an incredible lineup of feature-length films from around the globe, complemented by an eclectic selection of captivating shorts.

Kicking off the festival in spectacular style, our Opening Night proudly presents the riveting The Edge of Nature by the acclaimed Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated director, Josh Fox (Gasland) who will join us for this World Premiere. This special night commences with a dazzling red carpet reception, paving the way for Byron’s annual ten-day celebration of cinema.

The heart of BBFF2023 throbs with documentaries that promise to both enlighten and entertain. Dive into the intricate world of Australian artist David Bromley in Bromley: Light After Dark or revel in the musical vibrancy of Cuba with Habana Shakes. Ground Swell: The Other Side of Fear is a deep dive into the psyche of big wave surfers and the essence of human instinct. Mutiny In Heaven – The Story Of The Birthday Party chronicles the turbulent journey of Australia’s most iconic post-punk band, while Freedom Is Beautiful paints a poignant tale of two Kurdish refugees seeking solace and acceptance.

On the dramatic front, BBFF offers an array of award-winning narratives spanning cultures and themes. From France, Let’s Get Lost (Ailleurs si j’y suis) offers a comedic lens on life’s idiosyncrasies, while Wim Wenders’ (Paris Texas) drama Perfect Days celebrates the beauty of life’s simple pleasures. Radical, an incredible tale of possibility and hope, which won Sundance’s Audience Award and is sure to delight Byron audiences.

Amongst the films on offer are Short Film Sessions featuring the best of emerging Australian Filmmakers, powerful global cinema and surf film. BBFF2023 promises an exploration of human experiences — be it adventure, acceptance, love, or the myriad emotions that define our existence. With the tagline – Anything is Possible 2023’s festival is a testament to the power of cinema and its ability to connect, challenge, and inspire.
