Master filmmaker Agnes Varda joins creative and intellectual forces with renowned street art JR to explore the nooks and crannies of rural France in JR’s van that doubles as a huge photo-booth.
As they travel through the backroads of France’s beautiful countryside they spend time with miners, farmers, dock workers, itinerants and residents talking and joking. Between themselves though they plot like two naughty school children how to create lasting artworks of their impressions.
Marrying JR’s international reputation as large scale poster artist and her own ability to capture beautiful portraiture and simple observations they produce some spectacular artworks which they affix to barns, walls, WW2 blockhouses and all manner of public spaces for sensational effect.
What has the most impact however are the reactions of the individuals whose sometimes forgotten lives and faces are magnified 100 times loud and proud and on view for a public celebration of community. It’s a very lovely thing to behold and within it all there’s the added layer of Agnes’ ageing and her own bittersweet reflections that hit with surprise and honesty.
