Five years after winning the Palme d’Or for Shoplifters, Academy award nominated filmmaker Kore-eda Hirokazu returns with big-hearted drama, BROKER, starring Cannes Best actor winner Song Kang Ho (Parasite). BROKER is the Japanese filmmaker’s first all-Korean feature and a rare crowd-pleasing, high-concept genre film with a stand-out performance from Song Kang Ho.
The film follows two brokers (Song Kang-ho and Gang Dong-won), who sell orphaned infants, circumventing the bureaucracy of legal adoption, to affluent couples who can’t have children of their own. After an infant’s mother (K-pop star Ji-eun Lee), surprises the duo by returning to ensure her child finds a good home, the three embark on a journey to find the right couple, building an unlikely family of their own.
Wryly funny and compassionate, BROKER ponders the ethics of adoption with nuanced and delicate character studies.
