The hypnotic, erotic final film from legendary Japanese director Nagisa Oshima (IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES, MERRY CHRISTMAS MR. LAWRENCE), TABOO [Gohatto] concerns the forbidden desires between the male members of a samurai militia unit, as sparked by the arrival of a handsome newcomer to the group (played by Ryuhei Matsuda) during the end of the samurai era in the mid-19th century. Co-starring Takeshi Kitano and featuring an extraordinary score by Ryuichi Sakamoto, TABOO was selected in 2017 by writer-director Barry Jenkins as part of a retrospective series of titles that influenced his 2016 Best Picture-winner Moonlight.
