Synopsis

In 2016 the members of the Chapecoense soccer club, an underdog from Brazil, boarded a plane for a trip to Colombia to play a crucial match against the Atlético Nacional team. Eight miles from the airport in Medellín, the charter craft crashed in the nearby mountains; all but six of the 77 passengers died. The team itself lost 19 players.

Nossa Chape tracks the rebuilding of the Chapecoense club. With exclusive access to the new team, families of the deceased, and three surviving players, this documentary shows a team and a city divided about how to handle tragedy — should they focus on keeping the memory of the dead alive or move on with their own lives? Directors Jeff and Michael Zimbalist, and co-director Julian Duque, track the ripple effects out into the broader community: from the few managers left alive, through the widows, through the broader community of Chapecó whose hopes and dreams were caught up in the Chapecoense players, and then the players and staff brought in to build a new team in the shadow of the old.

The film shows that the battle between mourning and moving on is perhaps the most difficult match of all.
