A stranger than fiction true story set during WWII 2 starring Colin Firth (Supernova, The King’s Speech) and Matthew Macfadyen (Pride & Prejudice), Operation Mincemeat depicts the deception effort by the Allies to keep the invasion of Italy hidden.
It’s 1943. The Allies are determined to break Hitler’s grip on occupied Europe and plan an all-out assault on Sicily, but they face an impossible challenge – how to protect a massive invasion force from potential massacre. It falls to two remarkable intelligence officers, Ewen Montagu (Firth) and Charles Cholmondeley (Macfadyen), to dream the most inspired and improbable disinformation strategy of the war - centred on the most unlikely of secret agents: a dead man.
In an inspired, although improbable, disinformation plan – the intelligence officers would trick the Nazis into thinking that Allied forces were planning to attack southern Europe by way of Greece rather than Sicily. Their plan was to disguise the body of a recently deceased man, equipped with false documents, and drop it off the coast of Spain where Nazi officers would take the ‘bait’.
Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Penelope Wilton (Summerland, Downton Abbey) and Johnny Flynn (Stardust), and adapted from Ben Macintyre's book of the same name, director John Madden (Shakespeare in Love, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) delivers an incredible true story of WWII espionage.
