The Devils Backbone 1680x560

SPA26 The Devil's Backbone

Marking its 25th anniversary, Guillermo del Toro’s poetic gothic ghost tale fuses elements of the uncanny with the war genre offering supernatural elements not for spectacle but as metaphor for lingering historical wounds. Set in a haunted orphanage during the Spanish Civil War, the narrative explores how children inherit the violence of adults, with the ghost of a young boy embodying unresolved injustice. Del Toro’s style is restrained yet atmospheric, favouring slow camera movements, warm but decaying colour palettes, and symbolic imagery like water, dust, and decay. The film’s horror is emotional rather than sensational, building unease through silence and implication. Its political dimension critiques fascism and civil conflict while maintaining a deeply human focus on grief and survival. The impact of the film lies in its fusion of fairy-tale structure with historical realism, influencing later works like Pan’s Labyrinth and shaping modern gothic cinema. The Devil’s Backbone remains a key example of how genre storytelling can express memory, loss, and moral ambiguity through a uniquely melancholic cinematic voice that blends history and myth in a way that feels timeless and affecting.

The Exterminating Angel 1680x560

SPA26 The Exterminating Angel

This razor-sharp slice of surrealist black comedy dismantles the bourgeois order through a simple but uncanny premise: after a formal dinner party, guests find themselves unable to leave the room, despite no physical barrier. Thematically, director Luis Buñuel uses this trapped setting to expose the fragility of social conventions. Politeness decays into desperation, hierarchy erodes, and civilisation is revealed as performative rather than stable. Repetition, ritualised behaviour, and the slow breakdown of etiquette highlight how thin the veneer of culture becomes under pressure. Stylistically, The Exterminating Angel is a masterstroke in creating mood through static interiors, cyclical dialogue, and controlled camera work that creates a sense of looping time and inescapable stasis. It established a legacy that is significant in surrealist and arthouse cinema and a cornerstone in Luis Buñuel filmography.

The Hunt 1680x560

SPA26 The Hunt

Celebrating its 60th anniversary, the festival closes with acclaimed director Carlos Saura's The Hunt presented in a new restoration. After eight years apart, old friends and veteran Falangists José (Ismael Merlo), Paco (Alfredo Mayo), and Luis (José María Prada), reunite for a day of hunting in the arid countryside on an old Civil War battlefield, with Paco’s brother-in-law, Enrique (Emilio Gutiérrez Caba) enthusiastically tagging along. Set over the course of a single scorching summer day, they spend their time drinking, reminiscing and hunting rabbits. However, as the day wears on, old tensions and resentments become more apparent, and violence soon bubbles to the surface.

The Spirit of the Beehive 1680x560

SPA26 The Spirit of the Beehive

This landmark work of Spanish arthouse cinema, set in the aftermath of the Civil War, brings us to a quiet Castilian village, where a young girl becomes transfixed by a screening of Frankenstein, sparking a search for meaning but blurring imagination and reality. In his directorial debut, Victor Erice crafts a film of extraordinary restraint and visual poetry. Bathed in amber light and unfolding at a contemplative pace, it replaces conventional narrative with mood, silence, and suggestive imagery. The recurring beehive motif evokes both community and repression, reflecting a society shaped by unspoken trauma. At its core, the film explores childhood perception, how innocence encounters mortality, absence, and fear. Rather than addressing politics directly, it conveys the psychological residue of authoritarian Spain through metaphor and atmosphere. Widely regarded as a formative masterpiece of Spanish Cinema, The Spirit of the Beehive has had a lasting influence on filmmakers drawn to lyrical storytelling and ambiguity. Its delicate interplay of memory and history continues to resonate, offering a profound meditation on the inner life of a child in a fractured world.
