Synopsis
Director Ronan Day-Lewis makes a dazzling feature film debut with Anemone, as two brothers estranged for decades try to untangle the complex, eternal ties between brothers, fathers, and sons. Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis, who co-wrote the script with his son Ronan, returns to acting for the first time in eight years. An enigmatic shared history marred by shocking violence and harsh religiosity has left brothers Ray (Daniel Day-Lewis) and Jem (Sean Bean) Stoker estranged for 20 years. Each brother has sought redemption in his own way: Ray lives a life of self-imposed exile, while Jem has taken refuge in his devout faith, and his devotion to partner Nessa (Samantha Morton) and their boy Brian (Samuel Bottomley). But a family crisis forces Jem to track Ray down and ask him to revisit some of the most troubling moments of his life. In Ray’s primitive cabin hidden deep in the woods of northern England, the brothers face the ghosts of the past, baring deep resentments, almost-forgotten grudges and untold tragedy. In his audacious first film, visionary painter Ronan Day-Lewis combines sweeping camerawork, striking visuals and darkly ethereal music with a decades-old mystery for a mythic portrait of two damaged men finally confronting their past. Also featuring powerhouse performances from a stellar supporting cast, Anemone will have audiences talking long after they leave the theatre.
