Synopsis

Cinqué Lee’s A Rare Grand Alignment is a heartfelt, thrilling coming-of-age story set against the icy heights of Norway during a once-in-a-lifetime celestial event in the winter of 1982, when three American boys find themselves suspended in a cable car high above the snowbound landscape. Devin (Roman Griffin Davis – JoJo Rabbit), Jamie (Charlie Price), and Syd (Felix Jamieson) are on holiday, bound together by friendship and a secret they’re desperate to keep. Their charm wins over cable car operator Øyvind (Kristofer Hivju), who agrees to give them a late-night ride to the mountain’s summit. But halfway up, disaster strikes: the power fails, the gondola grinds to a halt, and the boys are stranded in the night sky shimmering with the glow of the Northern Lights. What unfolds is an intimate, gripping tale of survival, guilt, and growing up under impossible circumstances. With extraordinary performances, a stirring score, and breathtaking visuals shot using groundbreaking virtual production technology, A Rare Grand Alignment captures the raw intensity of youth and the mysteries of the cosmos. A rare achievement in both craft and emotion, it joins the canon of unforgettable coming-of-age stories like Stand by Me and Stranger Things while charting a path uniquely its own.
