After he returns to India from South Africa, lawyer Mohandas Gandhi launches a campaign of protest against Britain's oppressive colonial rule. Dedicated to the concept of non-violent resistance, Gandhi is initially dismissed by English officials, including the influential Lord Irwin (John Gielgud).
