Synopsis
I’m a star, I’m a star, I’m a star. Returning to cinemas over two and a half decades on from its release, Academy Award winning writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson’s (One Battle After Another) Golden Globe winning and Academy Award nominated comedy-drama, BOOGIE NIGHTS. In the San Fernando Valley in 1977, teenage busboy Eddie Adams (Academy Award nominee Mark Wahlberg) gets discovered by porn director Jack Horner (Academy Award nominee Burt Reynolds), who transforms him into adult-film sensation Dirk Diggler. Brought into a supportive circle of friends, including fellow actors Amber Waves (Academy Award Winner Julianne Moore), Rollergirl (Heather Graham) and Reed Rothchild (John C. Reilly), Dirk fulfills all his ambitions, but a toxic combination of drugs and egotism threatens to take him back down. BOOGIE NIGHTS is one of those breakthrough movies that leaves no doubt you are in the presence of a natural-born filmmaker. Like Spielberg's Sugarland Express or Scorsese's Mean Streets, Anderson's mesmerizing movie announces the arrival of a major career. It's a brilliantly candid study of the corrupting power of the American Dream and of the moral deterioration that is a byproduct of social upheaval.
