Synopsis

From BAFTA, Olivier and Tony Award-winning director Nicholas Hytner (The Crucible) and celebrated writer Alan Bennett comes THE CHORAL, a moving new period drama that reunites one of British cinema’s most distinguished creative partnerships. Their fourth collaboration following ‘The Madness of King George’, ‘The History Boys’ and ‘The Lady in the Van’, this richly observed film brings warmth, wit and humanity to a nation in turmoil. Set in 1916, as war devastates the Western Front, the Choral Society of Ramsden in Yorkshire finds itself depleted, with most of its men lost to the army. Determined to carry on, the society’s ambitious committee recruits local young men to replenish their ranks and appoints a new chorus master, the enigmatic Dr. Henry Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes). Recently returned from Germany and harbouring secrets of his own, Guthrie proves a demanding and uncompromising presence, even as conscription papers begin to arrive and uncertainty hangs over the entire community. Elegant, humane and quietly stirring, THE CHORAL is a film about resilience, shared purpose and the restorative power of music. As lives are fractured by conflict, the act of singing together becomes an assertion of hope and solidarity, offering a deeply affecting portrait of a community finding harmony amid the chaos of war.
