Synopsis

Cannes Best Actor Award winner Mads Mikkelsen (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Another Round) commands the screen with gritty intensity in this rousing Nordic historical drama set in the 1700s. In 1755, the impoverished Captain Ludvig Kahlen (Mikkelsen) sets out to conquer the harsh, uninhabitable Danish heath with a seemingly impossible goal: to build a colony in the name of the King. But the sole ruler of the area, the merciless Frederik de Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg), arrogantly believes this land belongs to him. When de Schinkel learns that the maid Ann Barbara (Amanda Collin) and her serve husband have escaped for refuge with Kahlen, the privileged and spiteful ruler swears revenge, doing everything in his power to drive the captain away. From the acclaimed director of A Royal Affair, Nikolaj Arcel, the 'awe-inspiring' period epic is an expertly directed, gun-slinging tale.

Reviews

"Builds like a glacier or rock formation — and it delivers."

- The Times (UK)

"The kind of sweeping big-screen epic that will make you say, “they don’t make ‘em like this anymore.” Thank goodness Nikolaj Arcel is."

- Tribune News service

"A full-blooded epic of one man’s achievements against all odds played perfectly by Mads Mikkelsen"

- Leonard Maltin

"The feudal warring over unclaimed Jutland territory may be strictly Danish, but the excitement, romance, and awe-inspiring visual spectacle of this melodrama is vintage Hollywood."

- Rolling Stone
