Bitter Christmas

Two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar (Pain and Glory, Talk to Her) returns to Spanish-language cinema with BITTER CHRISTMAS, a visually sumptuous, wickedly witty and intricately layered tragicomedy that blurs the boundaries between life, art and fiction. When advertising director Elsa (Bárbara Lennie) loses her mother, she buries herself in work rather than confronting her grief. Pushed to breaking point, she escapes Madrid for the volcanic landscapes of Lanzarote with her friend Patricia (Victoria Luengo), where personal heartbreak and creative inspiration begin to intertwine. Meanwhile, acclaimed filmmaker Raúl (Leonardo Sbaraglia), struggling with a creative crisis, begins writing a screenplay inspired by the tragedy of a close collaborator, imagining a woman whose life increasingly mirrors his own. As their parallel stories fold into one another, intimate relationships become artistic material, exposing the uncomfortable consequences of turning real lives into fiction. Featuring an acclaimed ensemble including Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Patrick Criado, Milena Smit and Quim Gutiérrez, BITTER CHRISTMAS is Almodóvar at his most playful and provocative, a dazzling exploration of grief, desire and the irresistible urge to transform life into art.
