Synopsis

Inspired by historical events, Herzog’s magnum opus, set in the early 20th Century, tells the tale of Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald, known as Fitzcarraldo, and his ambitious dream to build an opera house in the Peruvian jungle. To fund his project, he plans to exploit a lucrative rubber concession by hauling a steamship over a mountain to reach untapped rubber trees.

The film is celebrated for its epic scale and the real-life challenges faced during production, mirroring the protagonist's audacious endeavour. Herzog's direction captures the harshness of the jungle and the determination of a man willing to defy nature and society to achieve his artistic vision. Klaus Kinski's performance is powerful, embodying Fitzcarraldo's obsession and charisma.

Exploring ambition, obsession, and the clash between civilisation and the untamed wilderness, the work is an elegant encapsulation of the core themes present in Herzog’s films. The visually stunning landscapes, combined with Herzog's storytelling and Kinski's compelling performance make FITZCARRALDO a captivating and thought-provoking cinematic experience.
