A coming-of-age drama about the fragile time of adolescence, CHINAS tells the story of three young girls growing up in Madrid and their search for identity and belonging.
Nine-year-old Yun calls herself Lucía and oscillates between a strict, traditional homelife and her assimilated Spanish life at school, while her teenage sister Claudia rebels in search of her place in the world. Lucia feels Spanish and she wants to fit in, but her parents don't speak Spanish and they work all day long in their shop.
Conflicts and contradictions arise when another girl, Xiang, arrives at Lucía’s school. Both second-generation Chinese girls cross paths, separate and become vital to each other in the search for their identity amidst the dichotomy of cultures.
Filmed on location in Madrid, this superb third feature from award-winning writer-director Arantxa Echevarria (CARMEN & LOLA) is a fascinating tale that explores childhood, integration and belonging.
