BBFF23:Club Zero

Synopsis

Mia Wasikowska takes the lead in a sharp, off-kilter film which featured in Cannes’ 2023 Competition, playing a teacher who gathers a zealous student following around the idea of “conscious eating.”

As Miss Novak, played to perfection by Wasikowska, steps into the world of an esteemed international boarding school, her teachings on "conscious eating" seamlessly align with the institution's forward-thinking ethos. To eat with intention is viewed as not only an eco-friendly choice but also a defiant stand against societal overindulgence. It's not long before Miss Novak gains a devoted group, progressively dining on less, leading to the creation of the radical "Club Zero" before the students' unsuspecting parents catch wind. Director Jessica Hausner (Lovely Rita, Lourdes SFF 2010) masterfully blends elements of comedy and dread to portray this emerging sect, capturing a snapshot of a youth grappling with parental detachment, profound uncertainty, and apprehensions about what lies ahead. Club Zero stands out as a daring fusion of style and commentary.
