BFF23 Women in Love

Synopsis

Based upon famed British novelist D.H Lawrence’s tale of infidelity and exploration, Women in Love is brought to the screen by iconoclast Ken Russell (Tommy) delivering a narrative eschewing preconceived notions of British romance in the 1920s. We follow close friends Rupert (Alan Bates) and Gerald (Oliver Reed) who begin a relationship with two sisters; the schoolteacher Ursula (Jennie Linden) and the free-spirited artist Gudrun, played by Glenda Jackson in an Oscar winning role.

Sharing a deeply surreal affection for each other, they eventually wed, taking a joint honeymoon to Switzerland. Infidelity and death mar the journey, and in the midst of this madness the aloof Gerald and the eccentric Gudrun embark on exploration as both try to comprehend the notion of a perfect relationship. Progressive, tantalizing and polarizing this explicitly powerful and darkly funny work from the ever-transgressive Ken Russell, who along with the stellar cast, delivers a period piece that is unlike any other.
