Featuring an excellent cast led by Mala Emde (And Tomorrow the Entire World) and Jonas Dassler (The Silent Revolution GER18), this beguiling and intimate drama is a fascinating exploration of relationships.
At first glance, Leyla (Mala Emde) and Tristan (Jonas Dassler) seem like a happy young couple. They are travelling together to a mysterious remote island, where an acquaintance has invited them to spend a few days.
Many couples have arrived in the final days of summer to see the world through the eyes of someone else. After a festive welcome dinner, and without knowing exactly what they are getting themselves into, Leyla and Tristan participate in a ritual practice that allows them to exchange their bodies with other people, changing their perceptions, behaviour and desires. Here Leyla finds a sense of release and fulfilment, but when she refuses to return to her old self, the situation threatens to spiral out of control.
Directed and co-written by Student Oscar winner Alex Schaad, Skin Deep is a daring feature film debut that explores questions of identity, sexuality and gender.
