Winner of the Jury Prize at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, The Eight Mountains is an epic journey of friendship and self-discovery set in the breathtaking Italian Alps.
Pietro is a boy from the city, Bruno is the last child of a forgotten mountain village. The two meet one summer in a small mountain village in northwestern Italy and in their adventures together, they roam far and wide.
Over the years Bruno remains faithful to his mountain home, while Pietro aspires to greater heights. But as the years pass, fate reunites the two as young men (Alessandro Borghi and Luca Marinelli) and despite their attempts to erase their fathers’ footsteps, through life’s twists and turns, they always end up returning home. In their encounters, they experience love and loss, and are reminded of their origins, and discover what it means to be true friends for life.
Written and directed by Felix van Groeningen (Beautiful Boy) and Charlotte Vandermeersch, adapted from Paolo Cognetti’s award-winning 2016 novel, The Eight Mountains is a beautiful story of childhood, friendship and love.
