Synopsis

A vibrant fusion of music and poetic documentary exploring the Fado, a traditional Portuguese music genre dating back to 1820 that is often characterised by melancholic and soulful tones.

The film features performances by various Fado singers and musicians, as well as interviews with experts on the genre. Archival footage and scenes of daily life in Lisbon, where Fado originated are meshed across various segments, each focusing on a different aspect of the Fado tradition. Attempting to capture the elusive nature of the Portuguese “Saudade” and to depict a faithful portrait of the Portuguese soul through its most emblematic musical genre.

In addition to showcasing the music, the film also explores the cultural and historical significance of the Fado, as well as its role in Portuguese identity.

Fados continues Saura’s engagement with the examination of performance, offering a visually stunning and musically engaging film that showcases a comprehensive exploration of the Fado genre and its cultural significance.
