SPA23 In the Company of Women

Synopsis

Summer, 1976.

In the Basque town of Errenteria, 16-year-old Bea (newcomer Alícia Falcó) is inspired by the winds of change that are sweeping the country, during the Spanish transition from dictatorship to democracy when long-suppressed ideas were starting to come into open conflict with the establishment. She joins a group of women, whose aim is to highlight the feminist cause and to secure women’s right to legal abortion.

The rebellion coursing through Bea’s veins encourages her commitment to the activist cause, but when combined with sudden, unexpected feelings for new friend Maider (Elena Tarrats), a girl who is somewhat older than her and from a respectable family, her world begins to turn upside down.

Inspired by real-life events, in which eleven women were jailed for having abortions, Silvia Munt’s elegant drama In the Company of Women is a tribute to the brave women of a generation and the plight of women who clandestinely helped others to cross the border to France to terminate their pregnancy with dignity.
