Each month at Chauvel we handpick a double feature presentation we know you’ll love. For May, we present the writing/directing extraordinaires, the Coen Brothers, and two of their most hilarious yet intricate odysseys, The Big Lebowski + O Brother, Where Art Thou? (MA15+).
To start the afternoon, the infamous The Big Lebowski really ties the room together as a sly and hilarious homage to noir movies and detective novels. Perhaps you don’t think it’s the greatest comedy ever made, but that’s just, like, your opinion, man.
We follow on with the Coen’s O Brother, Where Art Thou? The film is loosely based on Homer’s The Odyssey, despite the Coen’s themselves admitting to never having read it… and yet, it’s certainly a Homeric journey through Mississippi during the Depression, filled with images of that time and place which have been trickling down through pop culture ever since.
