Chauvel Encore!
Sci-Fi Season

Chauvel Encore!
Sci-Fi Season

Due to popular demand, CHAUVEL ENCORE! (previously Chauvel Tuesdays) has moved to Friday nights and Sunday afternoons, giving cine-files even more chance to catch the very best in cult and classic cinema the way it should be seen, on the big screen!

This season we present a series of legendary sci-fi titles that reach for the stars, with retro prices to match – $10 for Movie Club members, $15 for General Admission.  Take advantage of our $5 Young Henrys Beer special too!

GATTACA (1997) | July 12 & 14
We start the season with Andrew Niccol’s scientifically provocative, GATTACA.  Intelligent and still socially relevant 22 years later, Gattaca is an absorbing sci-fi drama that poses important and interesting ethical questions about the nature of science and the danger humanity faces with the everlasting threat of discrimination.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (1977) | July 26 & 28
Steven Spielberg’s direct follow up to JAWS (1975), his first major box-office success,  CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND is a deeply humane science fiction adventure about a disparate group of people who attempt to contact alien intelligence, exploring themes of male obsession, cosmic mysticism, and music.

AKIRA (1988) | August 9 & 11
Exploding on the screen in all its bloody glory is one of the best-known examples of contemporary Japanese animation, Katsuhiro Ôtomo’s AKIRA.  This cyberpunk adventure takes place in the post-apocalyptic city of Neo-Tokyo, with style and substance running neck and neck in this thrilling, bold landmark film that just refuses to become dated 31 years on.

INCEPTION (2010) | August 23 & 25
Prepare your mind for the psychological sci-fi action film from visionary filmmaker Christopher Nolan.  An endlessly fascinating swirl of a film, INCEPTION was that rare summer blockbuster that succeeded viscerally, emotionally, as well as intellectually, and proved audiences will flock to grade-A filmmaking when done right, and every studio has been mimicking its masterpiece of a trailer ever since…

THE MATRIX (1999) in 35mm! | August 30 & September 1
The mind-bends continue with 1999’s legendary THE MATRIX from the sibling writer/director team, the Wachowski’s.  Marking its 20th Anniversary, the film continues to be technologically stunning and thrillingly visceral, but also philosophically relevant. A cultural touchstone that has come to define the sci-fi genre.  This film may be all about the future, but we’re keeping it old-school with a pristine 35mm print!  The same audiences would have first seen it as 20 years ago.

THE TERMINATOR (1984) | September 6 & 8
We can’t do a sci-fi season with a James Cameron classic… so we go to the one that launched his career (and some guy called The Governator), THE TERMINATOR.  With its impressive action sequences, taut economic direction, and relentlessly fast pace, it’s clear why THE TERMINATOR continues to be an influence on the sci-fi genre that will be revisited for decades to come.
