Includes a Q&A with Cate Blanchett & director Warwick Thornton!
Watch TrailerThe acclaimed Indigenous Australian director’s evocative drama stars an incredible Australian cast including two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett (Tár), Deborah Mailman (The Sapphires), Wayne Blair (director of Top End Wedding), and 11-year-old Aswan Reid “tipped to be the next movie star” after his stunning breakout performance.
Set in 1940s Australia, the film depicts the mesmeric story of a 9-year-old Aboriginal orphan boy (Reid) who arrives in the dead of night at a remote monastery run by a renegade nun (Blanchett). The new boy’s presence disturbs the delicately balanced world in this story of spiritual struggle and the cost of survival.

“…the visual power of Thornton’s gorgeous compositions remains transfixing.”
– The Hollywood Reporter
“Warwick Thornton, with help from Blanchett as actor and producer, tells a mystical story that ties into shameful Australian history.”
– The Wrap
“Aswan Reid stuns as the titular young man at the heart of this beguiling Aussie parable.”
– IndieWire
“Blanchett brings… a fierce authority born of repressed emotion.”
– The Guardian
“The film’s visual splendor, along with a ripely entertaining performance by producer Cate Blanchett (in a rare return to Australian features) as the orphanage’s offbeat abbess, represent its chief selling points… [but] in the title role, kinetic, wide-eyed novice Aswan Reid is its secret weapon.”
– Variety
