Liam Scarlett’s glorious production of ‘Swan Lake’ is testament to the late choreographer’s abiding love of classicism and innate musicality. While remaining faithful to the Marius Petipa/Lev Ivanov text, Scarlett’s additional choreography and John Macfarlane’s glittering designs breathe new life into what is arguably the best-known and most- loved classical ballet. Tchaikovsky’s tale of doomed love was his first score for ballet. Soaring with its symphonic sweep, it combines perfectly with exquisite choreography, from the grand pas de deux of Prince Siegfried (William Bracewell) and Odile (Lauren Cuthbertson) to the swans at the lakeside. An intoxicating mix of spectacle, mystery and intimate passion, the overall effect is irresistible.
Film location: Covent Garden, London
