Alice (Esther Gemsch) and Peter (Stefan Kurt) are celebrating their retirement. When their children gift them with a cruise on the Mediterranean, they look forward to this new phase in their lives. But then Alice’s best friend Magalie dies unexpectedly and Alice discovers that she had been having a secret affair in France for 15 years. Plunged into an existential crisis, Peter becomes a health fanatic, to hedonist Alice’s chagrin.
So, when Peter invites Magalie’s widowed husband Heinz (Ueli Jäggi) to join them on the cruise, which Alice had hoped would breathe new life into their marriage, their harmonious retirement is over and pent-up frustrations bubble to the surface. While Peter spends time with Heinz, Alice takes a shore excursion to Marseille and it is only on their separate paths of self-discovery that the couple find unexpected new ways to spend their golden years.
A break-out hit at the Swiss box office, Barbara Kulcsar’s Golden Years is an affectionate feel-good comedy that shows it is never too late to find happiness.
