Irish Film Festival Opening Night
7:15pm arrivals for pre-film reception ahead of 8:30pm film
The extraordinary story of how Irish dance evolved and how it became a global phenomenon. Beautifully shot and mesmerising to watch, Steps of Freedom relies on historical records, scholars, practitioners and musicians to trace the history and development of Irish dance. From early roots in pagan rituals, through times of oppression as a ‘dance of resistance’, cross-pollination with other cultures via trade routes through Spain and Africa and the practice of indentured labour in the West Indies, Irish dance is the living embodiment of the Irish character. Featuring original performances by some of the greatest contemporary dancers, the film reveals how Irish dance has been practiced through history. A film with broad appeal, Steps of Freedom is a celebration of the history and heart of Irish culture. Note this presentation will conclude with a post-screening Q&A recording featuring IFF’s Enda Murray interviewing the filmmakers.
