Two parallel stories take place between tobacco dryers during a summer tinged with magical realism in this enchanting drama.
At the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range, there is a small rural town where locals have long made their living by farming tobacco. Seven-year-old Vera (Vera Centenera) lives in the big city but adores spending the holidays in her grandparents’ town and particularly in their deserted tobacco barn. In contrast, Nieves (Ada Mar Lupiáñez), a teenager from the town who works on the family’s farm all day, can’t help but feel caged.
The two girls, each driven by their sense of adventure and a need to find themselves, will be connected to a magical creature that will change the way they see their own reality.
With a creature created by Oscar winners DDT (Pan’s Labyrinth, A Monster Calls) Tobacco Barns is a fantastical coming-of-age story. Set in dreamy landscapes, director Rocio Mesa’s feature debut, inspired by her childhood in southern Spain, transports us to a mysterious and moving summer where anything can happen.
