Working class boy is the unflinching story of Jimmy Barnes’s childhood – from the slums of Glasgow to the forlorn immigrant suburbs of Australia, to the day he is asked to join a band and find his escape and true path with Cold Chisel. A powerful and confronting story of growing up amidst domestic violence, poverty and alcoholism, the film shows the impact on Jimmy as a child and consequences for him as a man. Raw and compassionate, full of elegantly staged live musical performances, this is a compelling story of childhood survival, family, a search for love and, finally, redemptions.
The documentary also features some captivating musical moments. Elegantly filmed, Jimmy performs both solo and with Cold Chisel. He duets with his children, Mahalia Barnes and David Campbell, plus his brother- in-law, Diesel. An unforgettable new collaboration with Richard Tognetti’s Australian Chamber Orchestra is another highlight.
