The story of a young singer whose rise to stardom is mirrored by her older lover’s inexorable fall, the second version of A Star is Born remains one of the most emotionally compelling films ever produced by Hollywood. Expertly directed by George Cukor who skilfully negotiates every turn in the film’s roller coaster of a narrative, the film is also graced by two of the finest performances ever put on screen. Judy Garland is perfectly cast as the aspiring singer, and James Mason is no less brilliant as the tragic figure of Garland’s fading mentor and husband. A bona-fide classic.
