FILM NEWS

Ryan Gosling to star in new ‘Wolfman’ Film

3 June

Following the success of The Invisible Man, Universal is delving further into its treasure trove of classic Hollywood films with a reboot planned for the 1941 classic, The Wolf Man – and attached to star is Hollywood A-lister, Ryan Gosling.

Variety has revealed that executives at Universal have been meeting with directors over the past few weeks which hopefully will lead to a decision about who will helm the film. While there is no one at the top of their list, Cory Finley, who recently received stellar reviews for his HBO drama “Bad Education” – starring Hugh Jackman and Allison Janney, is a strong potential.

At this point, it is unknown what new take will be made on The Wolf Man, but it is believed to have a modern setting – in the same vein as Jake Gyllenhaal’s inventive thriller Nightcrawler, but with a supernatural twist.

Lauren Shuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, who wrote for Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black” have already penned a script – which, incidentally, was based off an original pitch by Gosling himself. His interpretation fell in line with Universal’s new vision for its roster of revamped monster movies, emphasizing a focus on filmmakers to create their own unique stories.

Familiar names who have pitched these string of films include James Wan, Paul Feig and John Krasinski. Studio insiders have stressed that by loosening the restrictions, there is more opportunity to have the success of The Invisible Man, which cost a mere $7 million and returned $122 at the box office before theatres were forced into closure due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Timing for “Wolfman” is also unknown due to the production freeze in the US but we welcome more classic Universal monster movie reboots!
