Moonage Daydream Is No Ordinary Documentary

David Bowie was no ordinary man, so it’s only fitting that a film depicting his extraordinary life is unconventional too. Last week a survey by British television station Sky Arts found the rock icon to be the ‘#1 most influential British artist of any medium in the past 50 years.’ He may be primarily known for his music, but Bowie’s influence extended far beyond a single medium or genre. He also made waves in cultural spheres of fashion, sexuality, live performances, film, and gender which garnered him both a mass of diehard followers and critics alike.

Not afraid to step outside what was conventionally accepted by society’s standards, Bowie created a distinct style despite many finding his androgynous fashion contreversial. His 1971 album cover for The Man Who Sold the World, in which he donned a dress, particularly stirred the public (move aside Harry Styles) but nevertheless, his talents and infectious eccentricity were adored around the world.

From Oscar-nominated filmmaker Brett Morgen, director of Cobain: Montage of Heck, and featuring never-before-seen concert footage, Moonage Daydream is an immersive cinematic experience; an audio-visual space odyssey that not only illuminates the enigmatic legacy of the rock icon but also serves as a guide to living a fulfilling and meaningful life in the 21st Century.

Unlike the slew of music biopics that have been released over recent years, Moonage Daydream takes an intimate and personal approach. ‘It is a genre-defying cinematic experience, based on one of the most iconic and global rock stars of all time, destined to be one of the defining cultural moments of the year.’ With ‘the full support of Bowie’s estate’ and ‘featur[ing] many of his greatest tracks, as well as previously unseen concert footage’, the film is a gloriously immersive experience unlike any other.

After its premiere at Cannes Film Festival, Corey Semour of Vogue says the film is ‘a gloriously immersive kaleidoscopic examination not so much of Bowie’s life here on earth, but of the life he lived inside his head and his heart, which led him to create his art.’

Audiences will be able to freak out in a Moonage Daydream next month with the film releasing in cinemas on September 15.
